Recreation - Fishing, Hunting & Camping

Washington County has an abundance of water re-creational facilities.  The Washington County State Lake, located in the town of Millry, is a spring fed lake well stocked and maintained.  Boats are available for renting and fishing supplies are sold at the lake's bait and tackle shop.  There 
are also camping sites available.

 

The lake is stock with several varieties of fish including largemouth bass.  It's reputation for some of the biggest largemouth bass, attracts fisherman, not only from Alabama, but Mississippians as well.

Washington Counties newest facility is at Chatom.  A beautiful lake that includes a state of the art community center. The center is used for special events and can be reserved at the Chatom Town Hall for a small fee.

Fishing is also permitted at the lake for a small fee.

The eastern boundary for Washington County is the Tombigbee River.  With boat access at Bates Lake, McIntosh and Peavey's Landing it too offers the outdoorsman plenty of recreation activities.

A fourth public boat ramp will be under construction soon at Old St. Stephens State Park.

Hunting

Washington County is a hunter's paradise. From the swamps of the Tombigbee, the piney woods of Tibbie and Deer Park, to the hills at the north end of the county, wild game flourish. It's large population of white tail deer, many wild turkey and several other species of wild game makes hunting a popular outdoor sport.  Good conservation by individuals, hunting clubs and organizations such as The Washington County Wild Turkey Federation, insures many more years of successful hunting for the public.

Golfing

Washington County is proud of  it's newest addition to outdoor sporting activities.  Deerfield Golf Club, a privately owned and operated, magnificent 18 hole golf course, offering memberships, but is open to the public.  It also has a driving range, restaurant and pro shop. 

There are many privately owned catfish ponds located throughout the county that allow the public to fish, with a small fee for pounds caught.
